Breastfeeding Fashion Tips from a Rubbish Fashionista

Breastfeeding poses one big problem for me.  And it’s fashion related.  Now I’m not, by nature, a fashionista.  You are not likely to find me posting my general OOTD (Outfit of the Day, yes I had to google) anytime soon.  But I do still like to wear clothes and feel good about myself in them.  While I’m breastfeeding I find that my (already limited from carrying the extra pregnancy pounds that I haven’t got round to shifting) wardrobe becomes limited to clothes that I can stretch and pull for easy access (see point 5 in my 10 signs you are a breastfeeder as case in point!).

Personally I favour a top down, boobs out and feed approach in the breastfeeding fashion stakes. Along with anything to hide the mummy tummy. Which if I’m completely honest isn’t entirely a mummy tummy but is in entirety part a cake tummy.

In the interests of being a little bit style conscious for a week I decided that I would showcase some of my favourite breastfeeding fashion where I still feel like me and not just a cow.

Mens shorts and floaty vest combo

H&M Basics Top

I couldn’t find a pair of knee length women’s shorts ANYWHERE. So I snuck into New Look and picked up a pair of skinny men’s denim shorts, super soft, super comfy and even better my bum is hanging out for the world to see HURRAH!

My muffin top on the other hand…… hence the floaty see through vest top (courtesy of H&M Basics range) with a simple Primark (one pounds and eighty pence!) vest top underneath.

The neckline is stretchy enough for me to give Baby Boy access to the goods and stays in good shape so my boobs aren’t on show to the public.

One of my favourite casual outfits.

Casual Dress

H&M Dress Collage

As I said I’m a dress girl. The empire waistline does wonders for my belly. I picked up this gem from H&M and it’s down as a beach wear coverall. But, that handy Primark vest top, and a belt stolen from my husband mean that I can wear it as a day dress without flashing my (seen better days) nursing bra any more than I have to.

Not Quite a Dress but more than a Top

H&M Stripy Top Collage

The top that’s slightly long but still to short to wear without exposing said bum! Versatile enough to wear with shorts, jeans or leggings being back in Dubai means the men’s shorts come back in action alongside my Babylu Breastfeeding necklace as teething is hitting us HARD!

Dress

I nearly didn’t even pick up this dress to try on, discounting it for the high neckline until on closer inspection I realised the neckline was elasticates. Bob’s your uncle the dress is a winner!

Teaming up with a pair of sparkly sandals lifts the outfit from totally casual to acceptable for that random lunch date (that I never get….)

Maxi Dress

My go to staple. Red Herring maxi dress, I loved this so much I have it in pink and black as well.

Wedding Wear

The Josie Breastfeeding Dress

I just have to sneak this one in, this is what I’m wearing for my little brothers wedding in September from the lovely Milk and Mummy, a specially designed breastfeeding dress with a bit of glamour attached!

So there you have it, you don’t have to be a frumpy feeder if you don’t want you just need to work out your breastfeeding fashion style and adapt.

Love that your outfit choices are so varied and don’t stand out as nursing friendly. (unlike mine!)
I’m very basic in my choices with a plain h&m nursing top and an oversized top of sort with a pair of dark blue jeans.
I wish I could go into a shop and buy more stuff for me, I seem to just walk out with more baby stuff, joys of motherhood.

Lovely choice of outfits Laura! You’d never know the white and red dress allowed for boob access. Good find! And thanks for the mention! I hope you get lots of wear out of the purple Josie dress. I wore it in emerald for my brother in law’s wedding last summer.

Thanks Angela! I can’t justify breaking the bank when they end up being covered in baby sick!

Great post, I love all of your outfits, I am a jeans and tshirt/top person, but I love the dresses you have picked out! Very nice. I have a top similar to the dress with an elasticated neckline and it’s brilliant for easy boob access! So that’s my go too top when I have to wear something a bit more formal than a tshirt!

Thanks for the inspiration to try more non-nursing dedicated clothes. My little one is 1 now and nice to get some more ideas for non nursing/maternity clothes that I can still feed in if necessary.

Leggings are just a little bit too hot here but I wore them all the time in the UK 🙂 the babies are definitely better dressed than me and my husband c
