Dear Husband, I’m Dreaming of our Forever Kitchen

Dear Husband,

So we’ve spent time back in the UK.  You know what that means right?  A longing to move home and a Rightmove obsession looking at houses to buy for when we move back.  It doesn’t matter that I’m not entirely sure what there is round Kent or where is best to live, I know that it’s in the London commuter belt and that’s all that matters right?  I know we’ve friends dotted round there even if I have limited knowledge of geographical constraints and that the roads twist and turn and will generally take a million times longer to get anywhere than it does on the straight (yet awkward) roads out here in Dubai.

Still I’ve not let it put me off.  Though I have some conditions that I think you ought to know about for when we do go searching for our forever home.

I say “conditions” really there’s only one as when we find our forever home I will allow you to have the final say on almost everything.  As the chief chef in the house the kitchen is my domain, quite frankly pouring yourself a bowl of cereal in the morning doesn’t allow for you to have a say in what turns an ordinary kitchen into a dream kitchen.

But don’t worry.  Being the ever practical wife that I am I have taken to the internet, searched, oohed and ahhed, lusted after, drooled over a variety of kitchens. From which I have been able to write you this list of what is essential for you to make my dream kitchen a reality.

The Island

While cooking and baking I need space.  Even more so if the Toddler comes into help me which you know he loves to do.  As well as that I like company as I’m busy kneading bread (or weighing it out into the bread machine) and people to chat too.  I like work surface space and lots of it.  I like the focal point.  I would like NEED a butcher’s block island.

The Belfast Sink

Since we lived in our lovely flat in the ever so trendy Clapham Common with the beautiful Belfast Sink I have aspired to have one of these. A little bit retro, a little bit trendy, utterly gorgeous.

The Aga

Can I say Barbour wearing, Labrador owning, Hunter welly striding wannabe?

The Work Surfaces

Must be plentiful to allow for me to throw flour around gaily. And wooden. Oak preferably. None of this high gloss modern look. That doesn’t scream throw flour around to me.

Cupboards

Big and deep to fit all those electrical appliance I need to have (and seldom use but I don’t need you to point this out to me) as well as a special spice cupboard. Narrow shelves to allow for easy viewing of all the random spices in the cupboard but with a door so I can hide the mess that the cupboard will inevitably get in.

The Overall Look

If you hadn’t already got the look I was going for, which I am sure you have by now given that you know me so well, think French Country Kitchen.

Oak.

Dustings of flour.

Herbs hanging.

Scents of bread and baking filling the air.

Now I know it’s a tall order, but hey, a girl can dream can’t she?

And if we can’t find it maybe, just maybe, we can fit it ourselves? And when we do find it I promise that I will bake religiously whatever you want. I’ll even try to make real cherry bakewells again…..

Love you always,

Your Loving Wife x x x

We’re in Sevenoaks. A lovely area with a great community. But expensive.
