How NOT To Deal With A Hangover When You’re A Parent

Before we had children alcohol featured fairly prominently in our lives, after work cocktails, meals out with copious amounts of wine, cosy nights in sharing a drink or 2.

I was never one to say no to a glass or two of wine (I’m still not).  My husband is the same.  In fact we are both known for the habit of going for “one drink” only to rock up home at midnight (last tube dilemmas in London).  With the next days horrific hangover fixed with scummy maccies breakfast and sleeping the day away.

Then we had children.

And while alcohol features less in our lives it does still feature.  And so do hangovers.

One such occurrence was after a brunch extravaganza.  Not sure what a Dubai brunch is?  3 hours of unlimited food and alcohol.

Your glass is never empty.

We hit the champagne package.  The boys were with wonderful babysitters from Babies and Beyond, a couple of glasses in we loosened up.  Another glass and we forgot about the potential of dealing with a hangover the next day.  So we carried on.

And then the next day arrived.

Hanging.

Then we proceeded to do everything you shouldn’t do while trying to deal with a hangover when you’re a parent……

How NOT To Deal With A Hangover When You’re A Parent

Don’t….

Go to soft play.  You might think that it’s a great idea, that the Toddler will run round, use up all the excess energy he had, while you sit sipping hot coffee while the baby naps in the pram.  The reality will be you clambering round soft play, with a sweaty pukey sheen while the baby screams blue murder.

Watching him jump into the balls at softplay....
Watching him jump into the balls at softplay….

Don’t….

Decide to potty train.  Avoid all drinking while training.  You know there will be poo on the floor.  Up the walls.  Down their legs.  On the toys.  Up the stairs.  In general poo everywhere.  Just wait until a period of complete sobriety before commencing.  Definitely not one to deal with while hungover.

The dreaded potty....
The dreaded potty….

Don’t….

Let your none napping Toddler nap. Not only will you have an epic hour battle to get him to close his eyes you know it won’t coincide with when the baby sleeps so you’ll always have one of them awake. And those 5 minutes of peace will not be worth it when the Toddler is running round like the Tasmanian Devil at 10:30pm…..

Don’t….

Rely on the lie in. Even if it’s your turn you know you’ll end up getting up. Face the horror together. TOGETHER. And if you’re husband still won’t shift from the bed – he owes you big time. Like maybe a spa day big time.

Don’t….

Just don’t.

Until next time, when this:

Bubbles....
Bubbles….

Once again calls your name and you are too weak to say no.

Just remember that McDonalds breakfast helps, kind of……

**This post may have been inspired by my most recent hangover and what I decided to do – learn from me, don’t do this to yourself**

You’d think as we got older we’d get wiser as well?

Oh my goodness, I am bookmarking this! I graduate next week and there is a massive night out planned. Unfortunately my boyfriend is going out the next night so I will have a very short amount of time to recover from my hangover and be alive enough to deal with a toddler. I will most certainly be needing this guide!

Love this post, gave me a good giggle!

Oh no!!! Bad planning with the nights out! That means he has to get up and take over the next day as well as you had to!

And graduating is much bigger than a night out so you win!

      Massive congrats on graduation x

I never had the chance to be someone where alcohol was predominantly in my life seeing as I was only 16 when I had my first, and even now we (as a couple) very rarely drink, one or two glasses a year maybe. But this post has made me chuckle.

Definitely sensible! I think part of the problem was working in a culture where after work drinks were the norm, where sunshine equalled pimms on the river….. I need to snap out of that mentality and remember that a. One drink and I’m on the floor and b. The 2 small people have no sympathy!

Eurghhhh the thought of soft play with a hangover. Just no.

Hangovers with kids are just a whole world of hurt. Don’t… expect to feel fine again two days later. Don’t…think cooking a roast will fix you. Don’t…do it again for a very very long time 😉 x MMT #fartglitter

I couldn’t think of anything worse than going to soft play with a hangover lol! It actually gives me a headache just thinking about it…. a room full of sreaming kids when all I want is to stay in bed!

Haha. The sheer thought of soft play with a hangover made me queasy. Hope you’re feeling better now! 😉

I don’t think i’ve ever had a hangover since being a parent in 3+ years! Wow I need to get a life haha!!! I just don’t seem to have the time drink. Great post x

Don’t do it. Stay sensible and safe and untormented by hangover! My other problem of course is I am now a light weight! X

  10. October 19, 2015 / 2:35 pm

This is the exact reason I don’t tend to drink (a lot, maybe a little) when I know ive got a toddler to look after the next day. I normally get nanny to look after him so I get to sit in bed all day and eat rubbish food. Being ill when having a child is bad enough, let alone a self inflicted hangover haha!

Uh-oh! It always seems like such a good idea the night before. Soft play – wow. Just wow! I usually need to psych myself up for weeks, let alone attempt it with a hangover. However, I did go when six months pregnant. That was exhausting! #fartglitter

We’ve been doing a lot of soft play so I thought I was desensitized. I was wrong….

We don’t drink often but when we go out we go out hard. Rookie error. Rookie error every time!

  14. October 19, 2015 / 7:07 pm

Ha, this made me chuckle and is exactly why I haven’t drunk excessively since my kids were born. I used to be horrific with hangovers and hangovers and kids is just a terrible combination! x

I don’t drink at all – I never really liked being drunk & just stopped drinking entirely at 19. This is really making me giggle (sorry!). Everyone says you’re odd when you’re teetotal. People think it’s strange, people mock. Then everyone gets pregnant & become parents & suddenly no one is laughing anymore. Except for maybe the teetotalers. Just quietly though. Behind our hands. Again, sorry about that! 😉
PS. Soft play is just as bad when not hungover, as far as I’m concerned! #fartglitter

I love this. I am not a big drinker as I don’t handle hangovers very well and the thought of dealing with my adorable nutcase of a little boy whilst feeling worse for wear sends shivers down my spine. I am going away for a weekend soon though so I may try and have a few drinks in the hope that Nanny and Grandad keep him a bit longer the next day 🙂 #TwinklyTuesday x

  18. October 20, 2015 / 12:25 pm

Ha! You completely had me at your title…I had found a like minded soul. Brilliant post. Hard when your heart says, ‘more, more’ at 11pm, but that tiny little brain part squeaks…’NO! The kids will have you awake in just a few hours!’ Awesome! #TwinklyTuesday

Oh I’ve so been here! I remember taking my kids to soft play when feeling awful. My husband was even worse and looked like a creepy inappropriate man curled up in the corner of the baby section! And the coffee at soft play is usually terrible! I remember another time dragging my very hung over husband on a fairy walk. Actually typing this comment is making me realise I’ve tortured my hung over husband!

Hahaha creepy inappropriate man. I left mine sat head in hands on the stairs as I just couldn’t deal with him! We went to the soft play with Starbucks #forwardplanning

  22. October 20, 2015 / 6:39 pm

Feeling hanging at soft play is literally the worst thing in the world, it’s bad enough on a normal day but when you’re heading is pounding and you feel like you’re about to vom, it’s just not fun is it!! I don’t drink much these days but on the odd occasion I do then I definitely pay the next day! #twinklytuesday

I find that it’s because of sleep deprivation, I feel hungover when I’m not when the boys have me up all hours so add an actual hangover **shudder**

  23. October 20, 2015 / 6:51 pm

This post is so appropriate for my mummy. She had a wicked hangover on Saturday morning and actually puked while I was napping!! Not a good sound or look! Urgh… #TwinklyTuesday x

Haha, this is me so often. Our soft play is in an arcade- the noise and smells are tough when I’m not suffering, forget it with a hangover! In fact there’s very little I can do except pop Nemo on and pretend not to have a nap. Thankfully my wife has much more self control than me and usually covers me on my occasional hangover days.

  26. October 23, 2015 / 11:21 pm
