Addicted to My Phone

This week my #effitfriday rant isn’t actually MY rant more a rant about me from the husband.

Being a blogger I often have my phone in hand, checking Facebook, joining linkys, Twitter.Ā  Before I know it I am lost in an online world losing reality.  Missing out on little moments.

Being a mother I often find myself taking to Google to ask a question about the boys, to Pinterest to look up what I can make with the boys, Facebook to feel a little less lonely in the day.  Whatsapp to send a picture to my husband.  A message.

Is it really necessary?  Do I need to be attached to my phone 24/7?

No.

But I am.  And it’s not only driving my husband crazy it’s driving a wedge between us.  My husband said the other day that whenever he ends up reading mum blogs (which isn’t often not even mine) they all say the same thing that they need to put the technology down and get into the moment.  The same complaint.  From all of us.

What my husband doesn’t understand is that sometimes blogging can consume you.  You just want to finish a post.  You just want to pop this on Facebook.  Hang on someone has tweeted you.  You can’t miss this link up it’s your favourite.  He has his job where he feels those pressures.  That need to drive and push himself.  I don’t.  This is my drive.  This is my pressure.  This is my escape.

But…

He is right.  I am addicted.  Much like the wonderful photos in the Removed collection portrayed by photographer Eric Pickersgill where the impact of phones in families was shown.

It worried me.

I don’t want to lose the art of conversation.  I don’t want snuggles on the sofa and chats about our day to become sitting at opposite ends while I read about someone else’s day on the screen.

I don’t want that for my marriage.

I don’t want that for my family.

So today.  As the first day of our weekend I’m leaving my phone upstairs.  Out of the way.

Facebook won’t crash without me.  I don’t need to see the latest cat video I do need to see the Toddler shouting “Look at me Mummy”

My blog will keep on turning.  I don’t need to write something every day, I do need to go out, have fun, be Mummy, be a wife.  Creating inspiration to write about.

The internet won’t mind if I take a break.  It’s time to end the affair.

Getting the balance is always hard. I steer clear on weekends and evenings after I have finished working. But I think I’m still on it too much during the day. #effitfriday

Yep I hear you! Its like a habit, you can’t break out of. If I lose my phone in the house I get quite stressed and I’m running around like a loon trying to find it! Completely nutty lol #effitfridays

I think everyone feels the same! Blogging means the pressure of constantly doing something online and it sometimes does feel neverending! I hope you enjoy your break from the online world šŸ™‚

I agree, I hate having my phone on me all the time. I often have days where I just leave it upstairs and it does feel good to be phone free for the day (until your kid does something really cute and you can’t take a picture) Plus, it makes you feel more popular at the end of the day when you have lots of notifications instead of just replying as they come through! šŸ™‚ #effitfriday

That’s true – it’s hard not to be aware when I have the husband banging on at me!

Oh can really relate here. I check it so often, addictively – it’s not good! I do take breaks sometimes, but I pine for it then. I have a basic rule that I don’t blog around the baby, only when she’s in bed, but lately, if I want to post something at a certain time, I’ve been slipping. So hard to balance. And why is it so addictive?! #effitfriday

I don’t use my phone that much, mostly in the evening while in bed hehe.
I do however use the PC far too much, and I think I do need more time off it. šŸ™‚
It is hard though since all my work is also done on it, but it can be done! šŸ™‚
    Especially now in weekends…..right? šŸ™‚

Good luck! It’s hard to find a balance, but once i’ve done my comments like a good blogger, I’m done for the night.
