The Seven Stages of Nappy Changes with a Baby on the Move

The Baby has been on the move for a while, it happened a lot sooner than it did with the Big One and I have my suspicions that he will soon be walking (argh!).

Something which has come back to me with stunning clarity is the battle that is nappy changes with a baby on the move. The struggle is real people, the struggle is real.

The Unmumsy Mum posted this last year (before I had a baby on the move) which amused me at the time, but now I am there. Right there.

Earlier today as I sat and remembered a time where poo remained contained and not up my walls via the Baby’s hand I went through the range of emotions of the Kubler-Ross grief model and realised that it could also be applied once your baby is on the move.

The Seven Stages of Nappy Changes with a Baby on the Move

Disbelief

I can’t believe that my Baby is already rolling/crawling/pulling to stand/walk (*delete as appropriate, but know that each stage presents it’s own challenges and gets a little more difficult each time).

He is only so little.

He is only a baby.

He is MY baby.

Denial

“He’s just practicing a new skill, this won’t change anything.”

“It’s only while he’s mastering it.”

“Oh, changing him while he’s standing is so much more efficient.”

Anger

There is a POO TRAIL around my house. An actual trail of POO. Real life human POO. Poo is EVERYWHERE.

When did my life become all about poo?

Bargaining

If you sit still then you can have a satsuma….a banana….a rusk….a baby biscuit….heck if you don’t move you can have a CHOCOLATE BUTTON.

Guilt

Did I hurt him as I had to grab him by the leg and pull him back to me as he attempted to crawl away?

Will he be mentally scarred by me chasing him round the house like a lunatic waving a nappy in his face?

Is there such a thing as too many chocolate buttons??

Depression

The carpet will never be the same again from the poo incident in 2014.

My life has changed beyond all recognition, I daren’t go out anymore because what if he needs changing when we are out, I can’t face the public toilet battle.

Will this ever end??

Acceptance and Hope

It won’t be forever, soon there will be potty training….

The dreaded potty....
The dreaded potty….

Aww I remember those days! It can seem like a big deal at the time but you never hear of a 18 year old still in nappies 🙂

The little one hates having has nappy changed and it is always a battle. He also has the knack of pooing 20 minutes before Daddy’s due home. If he held of 10 minutes I could ignore it until Daddy got home! #effitFriday

Laura that cracked me up! This is my life at the moment. My little one turned 2 this week, he has 2 older brothers so we’ve been there and done it with them, but now it’s this ones turn to have a go and, my god, he’s a little menace I can tell you.
100% relate to all of those points – brilliant post!

I nearly spat tea all over the screen at the poo trail! xD I’m always amazed at how much poo something so small can create – where do they store it!! #FridayFrivolity

Love this! I am definitely going to enjoy this time while he can’t really roll and doesn’t move much when I change him; although he loves to put his feet in the dirty nappy if I’m not quick enough! #FridayFrolics

It’s all so awful at the time but when you look back you realise it only lasted a few months – but seemed an age at the time! #effitfriday

I did feel huge amount of guilt once with my youngest when I tried to change his diaper and in the effort to keep him from leaving I pulled his leg, dragging him closer to me and he ended up wit ha rug burn. I couldn’t believe I had done that to my baby. I hated myself for weeks after that. Thankfully, he’s 9 years old now and has no memory of it. #effitfriday

Oh gosh. My littlest is just about to reach this stage. She’s crawling and her hands are all over the place during nappy changes! Ew.

  14. March 11, 2016 / 11:24 pm

Oh my goodness, my littlest is just about to reach this stage and I had completely forgotten about it! She’s started crawling and her hands are *everywhere* during nappy changes. Ew!

We most certainly have this issue and it is a pain in the bum…..pardon the pun. Thanks for hosting #effitfriday

This is absolutely brilliant, Laura! All of these thoughts have flown through my mind at some stage. The stages never end either – after potty comes the missing the toilet while peeing or not washing the hands stages. Thanks so much for hosting! x

Ha ha! I love this as it is so true. Changing nappies when they are moving is one of the biggest parenting challenges. Little Miss is a night mare at having her nappy changed. She hides in a corner and it is impossible to get her out. OMG, I am dreading potty training. With Little Mister H due in July and Little Miss H starting nursery in September, i have no idea when to start trying. Arghhhh! Hugs Lucy xxxx

I remember it well! But developed standing nappy changes quickly, fine until they have an upset tummy! Via #effitfridays

Oh the days of poo! Makes me glad that we lived in a house with no carpet when the time of poo existed. Of course now that they are potty trained and wiping their butts in which sometimes the toilet paper doesn’t make it in the toilet nor does the toilet get flushed half the time and I’m quite certain that from time to time it’s poo that appears on the light switch *gasps*. I hate poo! Thanks for the laugh and for hostessing #effitfridays.

  20. March 13, 2016 / 12:12 am

Hahaha brilliant post! Amelia hated nappy changes at best let alone when she started moving it was a nightmare. Thankfully were done with that and potty trained now phew!!! X

  21. March 13, 2016 / 9:48 am

Haha I can very much recall the guilt that I may have pulled Toby’s leg and hurt him! He’s suddenly started actually lying down when I ask him too, it’s a miracle!xx

  22. March 13, 2016 / 10:05 pm

Rowan is an absolute nightmare to change and has been since he was able to start moving. I remember the days where he’d just lay still and it was actually quite lovely. Now I hate it!

    Laura x

  23. March 14, 2016 / 12:48 am

  24. March 16, 2016 / 2:53 am

This is hilarious and very true! I’m not quite there with my third baby but I remember it well from the other 2!

  25. March 17, 2016 / 10:09 pm

Ha ha! Brings back memories! I am so glad Baby is potty trained now and all this is behind us! Thanks for linking up to #TheList x

  26. March 23, 2016 / 10:37 am

Haha! I really don’t miss nappy changes! We had some lovely ones – not! Our twins are four now so the only time they wear a nappy is at night so I guess the next thing we have to tackle is nighttime potty training! #bestamdworst

  27. March 23, 2016 / 10:39 am

I’m wondering if this is a boy thing as the gremlin was always pretty good at lying there! I remember watching my Linky host Helen trying to change Alfie’s nappy with hubby! He was like a wriggly worm! Bless! The poo trail!? I’m having images!! Thanks for sharing with #bestandworst

  28. March 23, 2016 / 8:15 pm

Ha I am almost at this stage… he’s rolling but not crawling yet. We’ve already had a poo-on-the-carpet incident so I dread to think what’s coming next. x #bestandworst

Hello all the way in Dubai :o)

Henry turns one this weekend (i too am going the above seven stages, funnily enough stuck on denial) however I’m not quite ready for poo all over my house. Snot (maybe) food (only in the kitchen) toys (its a given) contents of my hand bag (oh Henry, not again) but poo? Poo? Nope I don’t think i’m ready for that. Off to design a nappy that doesn’t come off (EVER).

That’s true, I heard that from many women. But your article is really life saver, I hope it’ll guide us in future.
