The Things My 3 Year Old Has Had A Tantrum Over This Week

Tantrums. All children have them. The list of things that my 3 year old has had a tantrum over this week is a case in point even though I have been using the “blitter jar” to help us calm down when it all gets too much (and it is going great for the wobbly moments he is having) Tantrums still happen. Over the big things and the little things, as let’s face it, nothing is safe from a tantrum stropping 3 year old.  Anything can set him off, even the littlest, most innocent of things.

Some of the things that my 3 year old has had a tantrum over have left me scratching my head as to where they came from.  My favourites (if you can call them that) are the tantrums that aren’t really tantrums. The ones that have me dissolving in fits of giggles from the start that lead into the 3 year old laughing and no one remembering where the tears came from in the first place.

The Things My 3 Year Old Has Had a Tantrum About…. this week

1.  He wanted to play with the Baby, but not that way and NO the Baby isn’t allowed to touch any of his toys.  Not really playing then….

2.  He wanted to pull the plug out of the bath but for the water to (miraculously) stay in the bath

3.  He wanted some milk.  In the other cup. But not that other cup. The other one.

Clear as mud.

4.  He couldn’t find his blue box and the instructions:

On the glass table.
Which one?
The glass one.
Wheeeere?
Next to the couch.
The couch?
Yea. The couch. The only couch we have.
Where?
Right there.
Where?
You’re looking at it.
I’m not.
You’re TOUCHING it.

Weren’t clear enough.

5. I didn’t sing “I’m a little teapot” fast enough. Or slow enough. Or with the correct actions.

No Mummy, you’re doing it WRONG

Cue stomping away.

6. Suncream.

Suncream

No more needs to be said.

7. The time that the Baby was eating his dinner. Appaarently the Big One wanted that EXACT piece of baby corn that was on the Baby’s highchair. And the piece of banana in his hand. Or you know, all of the Baby’s dinner.

That’s MY dinner

Though it seems the Baby will be giving him a run for his money in the stubborn stakes soon enough….

What have your little ones thrown a strop about this week?

It occurs to me that if we as adults had tantrums over seemingly illogical things like toddlers do, we’d be sent to the funny farm, pronto for an extended stay… Toddlers and definitely 3 year olds are not logical or reasonable are they?

    Thanks for hosting! #effitfriday

Feeling your pain. My little boy asked for a cup of milk this morning, when I gave him milk he completely lost it because he didn’t, under any circumstances, want milk. Sigh! #effitfriday

He’s in that phase where our expectations of their understanding is sometimes beyond what it actually is. It’s a tricky age. You think they know what glass means, but despite being able to use it, they actually may not fully appreciate what it means. Then there is what we see as totally irrational but to them it is the most important and rational thing in the world. It’s just so confusing for all concerned. Hopefully it passes soon! #effitfriday

You’re so right Lisa, sometimes I’m so baffled as to why I can’t help but laugh which often diffuses the situation when he starts giggling as well. That only works with his “fake” tantrums rather than when he’s really upset and frustrated! (which is when we break out the glitter jar and a little chat one on one time) xx

Number 4 is my favourite! Give me strength! #effitfriday

Oh dear, the smallest thing can set them off can’t it! I particularly like the one about wanting to pull the plug from the bath but have the water stay in. How do you even begin to explain that’s it not going to happen! Thanks for hosting #effitfriday

It really would be nice to be able to peek into their heads and be able to figure out exactly what’s going on their little minds sometimes

He wanted to pull the plug out of the bath but didn’t want the water to go Brilliant.

There is no logic to their meltdowns is there?!

It’s a wave we all ride at some point, and I’m sure when all our tots are teens we will ranting about the same lack of logic and tantrums but in a slightly different way

It’s hard at that age because what they can do outstrips what they’re capable of doing.

I could write a similar post about my 12 year old, but as she can read, I daren’t!

Don’t you just love them! Its so hard to fathom them out sometimes. A favourite of mine was a tantrum over wanting Rice Crispies for breakfast when there was actually Rice Crispies in his bowl. Go figure! Number 3 is a classic…full melt down over drinks in the wrong cup. I get that one a lot.

God it is so frustrating dealing with toddler decision making especially when they are in a big fat mood, there is no comprising X #effitfriday

Oh boy, they keep you on your toes don’t they? We are not yet at the tantrum stage but our 16 month old is very opinionated so I’d say we’ll know all about it in a few month’s time. I love the idea of the ‘blitter jar’, definitely intend to use it when needed 🙂

I’m three too and have had similar conversations in the bath about the plug and the water. Genius. Hope the tantrums ease up…at least they aren’t in public! 😉 #TwinklyTuesday x

Haha yes we have three very much like this and one who although he is eleven, has tantrums over very different things – like his hair not going right in the morning! They never get any easier, you just have to pick your battles! #twinklytuesday

Is it bad that I laughed? I need to try to remember what mine had tantrums about but they never really went through it in any real form. I do remember my eldest throwing herself on the floor kicking her feet and I’d just laugh each time. She’s now 11 and when I told her about this recently, she looked doubtful it ever happened. You have the right temperament to cope. I only heard of the term ‘attachment parent’ when I read one of your posts recently! I’m such an intolerant ‘my way or the high way’ parent so they cottoned on REAL quick that it wasn’t going to work lol. #TwinklyTuesday

Oh this is hilarious! I mean not at the time but I just love the tantrum over I’m a little teapot. I don’t think we’ve had many tantrums this week – other than the usual not wanting to get dressed or go out!! Thanks for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday
