Now that winter is nearly upon us it is time to get your house ready for the colder months. Here is a list of the most important tasks you need to get done.
Have your boiler serviced
If you have not already done so, get your boiler serviced. A well-serviced boiler will work more efficiently and be reliable. If you get in now, before the rush, you should not be left having to wait for several weeks before the engineer comes.
Order your heating oil
Now is a good time to go online and order your heating oil from somewhere like Super Saver Oil. Again, you will be getting in before the rush starts. If you can accept the delivery on a day when the heating oil truck is in your area, you should be able to reduce the bill by a considerable amount. So, before placing your order, check to see if the firm you are using offers this type of service.
Sort out any draughts
On the next windy day, go around your home looking for draughts. This video gives you an overview of how to both find and fix most kinds of draughts.
Occasionally, you will identify draughts that you cannot easily fix. Make a note of them, take a photo and mark where you think the issue is. That way, the next time you have some work done in the house, you can ask the builder to sort the issue out.
Consider rearranging some of your furniture
Moving some of your chairs and sofas around a bit for the winter months is another idea. Bringing them closer to the main heat source in the room will help everyone to feel warmer.
If you have radiators, make sure that you leave a decent gap between them and your bigger items of furniture. This ensures that more of the heat can circulate freely around the room rather than being absorbed by your sofa or chairs.
Provide plenty of throws and blankets
Nothing feels nicer than snuggling up under a blanket. So, if your family likes doing that get last year’s one out and give them a wash. Or, buy some new ones.
Put down some rugs
Hard flooring is nice in the warmer months. It is easy to keep clean and feels nice underfoot. But, in the winter tiles can be very cold. So, put down some rugs. Make sure that they have a non-slip backing. Somehow a room always feels cosier when there are rugs or carpets down.
Bleed your radiators
If you have radiators, now is the time to bleed them. It is also worth turning your heating on and testing each radiator to make sure that it is working properly.
Decorate with warmer colours
The next time you redecorate, consider using some nice warm colours. Reds, oranges and yellows all work well. You haven’t necessarily got to go made with them. If you like you can just use them as accent colours. Cushions and rugs are particularly good for this.
