How to Prepare Your Body for Pregnancy

If you’re hoping to conceive a child at some point in the future, it’s important to know what to do to prepare your body for pregnancy. There are various important changes you can make to help improve the likelihood of conception, as well as giving birth to a healthy child. It would be worth starting with an appointment with your GP so that you can have a full check-up. This will be a great opportunity for you to get any concerns or queries off your chest.

Diet & Exercise

Diet and exercise play a huge role in a woman’s fertility. Being overweight when pregnant can cause a variety of problems, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, which could, in turn, result in miscarriage. Likewise, being underweight and exercising too much can affect a woman’s menstrual cycle and make it difficult or impossible to become pregnant. Moderate exercise is important, as well as a healthy, balanced diet. Following the Mediterranean would be a good place to start as it is rich in antioxidants.

Smoking & Alcohol

Of course, you probably already know that if you’re a smoker, you’ll need to quit if you want to increase your chances of conceiving. It’s also important to avoid things like alcohol and caffeine. This is true for both men and women, as it can reduce fertility in both parties.

Relaxation

Self-care is also important when trying to conceive, as stress can impact fertility. Try to make time to relax and take care of your wellbeing, perhaps with a spa day or a good book. Yoga and meditation are also great for reducing anxiety. Speak to your doctor or midwife if you would like some more tips and techniques on how to manage stress.

Egg Freezing

For those women who are not ready to have a baby, egg freezing is a good option for preserving fertility. As a woman ages, the quantity and quality of her eggs starts to decline, so freezing them while your young is a good way to take the pressure off of feeling like you need to rush into starting a family before the time is right.
